ASTM A36 Steel Plate
ASTM A36 Steel Plate is one of the most common grades of steel used in structural applications. This mild carbon steel grade contains chemical alloys that give it properties such as machinability, ductility, and strength that are ideal for use in constructing a variety of structures.Steel Structural 400 grade or SS400 is defined as per Japanese material standard for hot rolled steel plates, sheets, and strips for general structural usage. ( JIS G 3101). Primarily employed in the motors parts industry because of its low carbon content & lowest limit of tensile strength at 400 MPa.ASTM A36 SS400 steel is basically the same. ASTM A36 steel falls under the standard of the American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM A36/ A36M. The SS400 steel falls under the standard Japanese Industrial Standard JIS G3101.
Mechanical properties determine how a steel plate behaves under load, during fabrication, and throughout its service life. ASTM A36 steel plate is engineered to provide while maintaining excellent workability.

Yield strength is the most critical parameter in structural design. ASTM A36 provides a minimum yield strength of 250 MPa, ensuring predictable behavior under load.
| <= 20 mm | >= 250 MPa |
| 20–40 mm | >= 245 MPa |
| > 40 mm | >= 235 MPa |
This ensures structural reliability across different plate thicknesses.
The tensile strength range of ASTM A36 allows structures to withstand higher loads beyond the elastic limit without sudden failure.
| 400–550 MPa | |
| Yield-to-Tensile Ratio |
High elongation ensures good ductility, allowing ASTM A36 steel plate to deform plastically before fracture. This is particularly important for structures subjected to impact or vibration.
Thicker ASTM A36 plates maintain stable performance when properly manufactured and tested.
ASTM A36 is suitable for:
Its mechanical consistency supports safe and economical design.
ASTM A36 steel plate meets specified mechanical property requirements through strict inspection and quality control.
